ABOUT THE HOST:
TONY SAUNDERS:
The Man. The Artist. The Show Host.
Two-time Emmy Award-winning musician, composer, arranger, producer, and internationally recognized bassist Tony Saunders has lived a life immersed in music, legacy, and love.
Born into musical royalty as the son of legendary Bay Area keyboardist Merl Saunders, Tony’s foundation was nothing short of extraordinary. His godparents were jazz greats Wynton Kelly and Jimmy Smith, and his first piano lessons came from none other than Herbie Hancock. By age 14, he earned his first Emmy for collaborating with his father on the PBS documentary Soul Is. By 17, he was already performing alongside Jerry Garcia, launching a career that would span decades and genres.
A graduate of the prestigious San Francisco Conservatory of Music as a piano major, Saunders ultimately found his voice through the bass — inspired by legends like James Jamerson, Stanley Clarke, and Chuck Rainey. Over the years, he has performed and recorded with icons including Eric Clapton, David Crosby, Chaka Khan, Ringo Starr, Bo Diddley, and many others — a true who’s who of popular music and jazz.
Saunders’ artistry blends passion, sensuality, groove, and melodic storytelling. His 2020 album Sexy Somethin soared to #1 on SmoothJazz.com Global, while his instrumental twist on Rock Steady became one of the year’s most-played indie chart singles. His follow-up project, All About Love, represents not just a musical statement, but a life philosophy.
Working closely with keyboardist and producer Gail Jhonson, Saunders crafted a collection that reflects his devotion to love — love of life, family, music, and humanity. Featuring collaborations with acclaimed artists including Adam Hawley, Blake Aaron, Paul Jackson Jr., and Jazmin Ghent, the album showcases his growth as a melodic composer and bassist.
Saunders has graced legendary venues such as Yoshi’s, Blue Note Napa, Humphreys Concerts by the Bay, and the Great American Music Hall, captivating audiences with music that he says makes you “thank God you came to the concert.”
“I play the bass like B.B. King played Lucille,” Saunders explains. “With warmth, with soul, and with purpose.”
Today, beyond the stage and studio, Tony Saunders brings that same warmth and musical mastery to the airwaves as a radio show host — sharing the soundtrack of his life and the stories behind the music.
