About the Host:
A celebrated pianist, vocalist, composer, educator, author, and music director, Dr. Jhonson has built an extraordinary career in the music industry. Originally from Philadelphia, she studied at Berklee College of Music before landing her first major touring opportunity with Morris Day and The Time. She later relocated to Los Angeles, where she also taught at the renowned Musicians Institute.
Throughout her career, Gail has performed and collaborated with an impressive roster of artists including Brenda Russell, Jermaine Jackson, Pink, Norman Brown, Patti Austin, Jeff Lorber, Bobby Womack, and Jonathan Butler.
Known for her versatility across multiple genres, Gail has served as resident music director for the Common Ground Theatre and is nationally recognized as longtime musical director for Norman Brown. She is also the founder and leader of the acclaimed all-female ensemble Jazz in Pink, which celebrates its 18th anniversary in 2026.
Gail’s accomplishments include multiple award recognitions, a Grammy nod, Billboard-charting singles including “Glow,” “Joy Joy,” and “Keystroke,” and a recording partnership with Shanachie Entertainment. In 2019, she founded Jazz in Pink.org, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering women and girls through music education, workshops, and community outreach.
In addition to performing and recording, Dr. Jhonson’s is also an accomplished author with instructional books published by Hal Leonard, including Funk Keyboards, Dictionary of Keyboard Grooves, and Jazzy Keyboards.
She earned her master’s degree in Music Business from Southern New Hampshire University and Berklee College of Music, and later completed her doctorate at Walden University.
